The eagle has landed!
This stunning Indigenous-inspired shade shelter is the centrepiece of an all-new neighbourhood parkland currently being delivered at Watson in Canberra’s northern suburbs.
Custom detailed and manufactured by Fleetwood Urban with Ironbark hardwood and an Indigenous art overlay by Ngunnawal Artist Lynnice Church, and then cut directly into the Coreten steel roofing, the original design was created by Justin Schilg and the team at Redbox Design Group. It recognises the importance of the wedge-tailed eagle to the local Ngunnawal people (‘Maliyan’ in the Ngunnawal language).
Members of the Dhawura Ngunnawal Caring for Country Committee were directly involved in the development of the overall design of the new parklands, including the Maliyan shade structure itself.
When complete, the parklands will incorporate numerous ideas suggested by the local community, including nature play, swings, slides, climbers and spinners. Static exercise equipment and a kick around space will cater for older children and adults, while a selection of endemic plants with a practical connection to Ngunnawal community and culture will also be included.
The Maliyan shelter is our latest collaboration with Redbox Design Group. Watch this space for more news as the project nears completion in the coming months.
