Bondi Beach is a universally-loved icon that belongs to the world, Australia, Sydney and the local community. Balancing these identities was central to the design philosophy created by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects, to ensure the natural and heritage environments were respected, accessibility was enhanced and the transition was carefully managed for locals and visitors alike.

In delivering a contemporary new vision for Bondi, the shelter designs were inspired by the flowing form of waves and clouds, linking the urban bustle of Campbell Parade to the movement of the Pacific Ocean.

Construction of these iconic and deceptively complex beach shelters provided several challenges. One was purely the logistics of working at one of Sydney’s busiest public locations, filled with curious tourists and locals on a daily basis, from early in the morning to late at night.

The high profile nature of the project also demanded the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship, coupled with a finish that offered excellent durability and corrosion resistance given its exposed seaside location.

Due to the high spec nature of the stainless steel, hardwood and copper specified for the shelters, specialist manufacturing techniques were adopted requiring the highest level of care and attention to detail.

Attracting thousands of visitors every day, it was essential construction took place in a safe and timely manner. Beyond the safety of the site itself during construction, all workmanship and materials had to be of the highest calibre to maximise finish quality and prevent future risks to visitors.

Thoughtful consideration was given to both the design and construction of the shelters, allowing them to exist seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. The roof structures, for example, follow the fall of the land, dipping to shelter the seaward side and lifting for winter solar access to the north-west.

The rooflines were also designed to minimise view interruptions to the ocean, while newly-regenerated landscaping provides natural wind protection to each shelter.
